Interviews to extract mental models, not anecdotes. He wants the decision-making architecture a guest uses across every domain - the reusable thinking, separated from the situation it happened in.

Signature move

Slow, deliberate questions that ask the guest to define their terms and examine their own reasoning. He is comfortable sitting in the abstract because that is where the transferable insight lives.

The Craftsman

Goes deep on the how of the work itself. Where others extract strategy or story, Ridd extracts process and taste - the cursor movements, the file structure, the thousand invisible micro-decisions that separate good craft from great.

Signature move

Screen-sharing the actual work and narrating the decisions in real time. He treats craft as something demonstrable, not describable, and pushes until the abstraction becomes a concrete move you could repeat.

What the masters share

Specificity is the only proof

Every one of these interviewers, in their own register, refuses the abstract. Lenny demands the number, Ridd demands the cursor movement, Shane demands the defined term, Steven demands the specific moment. The shared belief: a claim you can't make concrete is a claim you can't trust.

The first answer is the cover story

Mastery in interviewing is patience with the second and third answer. The rehearsed reply protects something - a fear, a simplification, a press line. The follow-up, and the silence after it, is where the real material lives.

Extract the reusable, not the remarkable

A great anecdote entertains; a great model transfers. The best questions strip the situation away and ask what general principle was running underneath - so the listener inherits a tool, not just a story.

Strategy, emotion, philosophy, craft are not competing depths - they're the same shaft dug at different angles. The complete interviewer borrows from all four: get the playbook, find the fear, lift the model, replay the move.

The trinity - really a quartet - isn't a ranking. It's a toolkit. Master one register and you're a good interviewer. Learn to switch between all four inside a single conversation, reading which depth the moment is asking for, and you become the rare one a guest leaves saying: nobody has ever asked me that before.
